How to Access Windows Programs Remotely

February 27, 2023 By Rublon Authors

Last updated on April 3, 2024

Some Windows users believe it is difficult to access remote applications remotely. But contrary to that belief, accessing remote programs via a remote desktop is both cost-efficient and simple. This guide describes how to effortlessly access Windows programs remotely.

How to access Windows programs remotely via Windows Remote Desktop Connection (RDP)

Remote Desktop Connection is an in-built Windows application you can use to access remote computers connected to the same network. The main advantage of Remote Desktop Connection is a natural and straightforward user experience. Also, you do not have to download or install any additional software to connect to remote computers using Windows RDP.

How to access Windows programs remotely: Host Side

The host side, or the host computer, is the device users connect to during a Remote Desktop connection.

Refer to How to Set up Remote Desktop for detailed step-by-step instructions on how to set up a Remote Desktop Connection on the host computer.

How to access Windows programs remotely: Client Side

The client side, or the client computer, is the device a user connects on (from) during a remote Desktop connection.

Once the host computer has been set up for remote connections, connecting to it is very simple:

1. Launch the Remote Desktop Connection app (Start, type “rdp”, launch Remote Desktop Connection).

2. Enter the IP address of the host computer (IPv4 Address).

3. Click Connect.

4. Enter the host computer’s username and password and click OK.

5. Connect to the remote desktop and access Windows programs remotely.

How to access Windows programs remotely via Third-Party Software

Chrome Remote Desktop, AnyDesk, and TeamViewer are only three of dozens of popular remote desktop software that allow you to access Windows programs remotely. If you use third-party software to connect to your remote desktops, we recommend you navigate to the specific setup instructions on the third-party software’s website.

Why you should secure your remote connections with MFA

Requiring devices to use Network Level Authentication to connect to Remote Desktop Services (RDP Server) or Remote Desktop Services (RDP Server) is a highly recommended option for remote connections. But authenticating users that way is mainly done through login and password. Unfortunately, passwords are weak and prone to many hacking techniques.

So, it would help if you had more than just passwords to thwart the hackers and ensure the top security posture of your remote connections. Thankfully, there is something exactly for you. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Rublon MFA can secure your remote connections

Rublon Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a cutting-edge security solution that ensures secure remote desktop access via MFA for RDP, MFA for RD Gateway, MFA for RD Web Access, and MFA for RD Web Client.
