Introducing YubiKey OTP Authentication Method

November 29, 2022 By Rublon Authors

Last updated on March 26, 2024

We’re happy to introduce the YubiKey OTP feature. Thanks to this new MFA authentication method, users in your organization will be able to use the one-time passwords (OTPs) generated by their YubiKeys to access their Rublon-protected applications and accounts.

What Is YubiKey OTP?

YubiKey OTP (also called Yubico OTP or YubiOTP) is a strong authentication mechanism built into all YubiKeys. The most common way of using YubiKey OTP is combining it with the username and password to gain Two-Factor Authentication. In this scenario, YubiKey OTP is the second authentication factor that is necessary to gain access to the account. So, YubiKey OTP can work just like any other secondary authentication method, such as Mobile Push or Mobile Passcode, to thwart hackers from gaining access to the user’s account even if the hackers know the user’s password.

How Are OTPs Verified?

One-Time Passwords (OTPs) are verified using Yubico’s web service for verifying OTPs called YubiCloud. This approach makes YubiKeys ready to use out of the box and does not require any additional configuration on the end user’s side.

Which YubiKey Models Support YubiKey OTP (Yubico OTP)?

List of YubiKey models that support YubiKey OTP (Yubico OTP)

How Does YubiKey OTP Work?

1. User initiates login to an application protected with Rublon and provides their username and password.

2. User selects the YubiKey OTP Security Key authentication method from the Rublon Prompt.

3. User inserts the YubiKey into the USB port of their computer and touches the YubiKey.

4. After touching the key, YubiKey automatically inserts the current value of the OTP into a text field and logs the user.

Note: Before you start using YubiKey OTP, you have to enroll your key.
