We are thrilled to announce that Rublon now supports TOTP-based third-party authenticator apps, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Twilio Authy Authenticator, and more! This means you can now secure your accounts with MFA via Third-Party Authenticator Apps.
The enrollment process is straightforward. It’s all done using a QR Code. Once users have enrolled their third-party app, they can use the Mobile Passcode (TOTP) authentication method to sign in to their applications, VPNs, and services.
How Rublon Supports Third-Party Authenticator Apps
We designed Rublon’s new feature to allow businesses and end-users to authenticate to Rublon-integrated applications, VPNs, and services using a third-party authenticator app.
This added layer of security may be helpful to users who already use a 3rd party app and are not comfortable with switching to the Rublon Authenticator.
That being said, Rublon Authenticator is still the more secure option because, apart from TOTP, it also offers more robust MFA protection via Mobile Push notifications and QR Code.
- Each user can enroll and use only one third-party authenticator app.
- Each user can enroll both Rublon Authenticator and another third-party authenticator app and use them interchangeably.
- Administrators can also use a third-party app to sign in to the Rublon Admin Console.
The third-party authenticator app enrollment process is easy:
- The user enrolls the third-party app by scanning the QR Code (or manually entering the key into their 3rd party app)
- The user enters the TOTP generated by the third-party app
That’s it!
After this simple setup, the user can authenticate to their applications using the TOTP generated by their third-party app. To do that, they enter the OTP as a Mobile Passcode when logging in to a Rublon-integrated application.

How to Enable Third-Party Authenticator Apps For Users
With our new feature, administrators can now allow end-users to authenticate with third-party apps when they sign in to their applications. You can do that globally using a simple checkbox in the Settings tab of the Rublon Admin Console.

Should you decide you do not want your users to be able to enroll third-party authenticator apps, simply uncheck the checkbox.
How to Enroll a Third-Party Authenticator?
Refer to the following guide for step-by-step instructions with screenshots to learn how to secure your accounts with MFA via Third-Party Authenticator Apps:
How to enroll a third-party authenticator app?
Rublon Is Much More Than Just TOTP
The Password + TOTP combination is a popular form of Multi-Factor Authentication. Entering the password and then entering the OTP code generated by an app is the most common way of protecting essential applications and data from unauthorized access.
Nevertheless, TOTP can be cumbersome to users because it requires them to manually type the TOTP every time they log in. Also, TOTP authentication is less secure than other authentication methods that Rublon Multi-Factor Authentication offers.
WebAuthn/U2F Security Key, YubiKey OTP, and Mobile Push are all more secure authentication methods than Mobile Passcode (TOTP). We recommend you use these instead to gain the highest level of security in your organization.
Summing up Secure Your Accounts With MFA via Third-Party Authenticator Apps
With users now able to authenticate via a third-party app, businesses can benefit from yet another authentication option for their end-users.
And given how easy the third-party authenticator app enrollment and sign-in are, it’s never been easier for businesses to increase their security levels.
