We are thrilled to announce that the Rublon MFA for Windows connector now allows you to authenticate Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections using FIDO U2F & FIDO2 security keys and FIDO2 passcodes! This new feature enhances the security of your remote access, ensures that only authorized users can access your systems, and provides peace of mind in today’s cybersecurity landscape.
See It in Action
Below is a quick demonstration of how simple and secure RDPing with FIDO keys can be.

You can also use FIDO2 passkeys, including Windows Hello’s passkey secured with a Fingerprint or PIN, as portrayed in the following GIF:

Strengthen Your RDP Security with FIDO Authentication
As a member of the FIDO Alliance, Rublon has integrated FIDO’s strong, phishing-resistant authentication standards into our multi-factor authentication (MFA) connector for Windows. This integration means you can now use your hardware keys to securely authenticate RDP connections, ensuring only authorized users can access your systems.
Do I Need to Take Any Action?
No action is required! The FIDO security key integration for RDP connections works seamlessly out of the box. The change was made directly in the Rublon API, so you can use FIDO security keys for secure RDP authentication immediately.
To use this new functionality, you must:
- Ensure your Windows operating system has all updates installed.
- Do at least one of the following if you haven’t already:

Known Limitations
- This feature works only on Windows Server 2019 (version 1903 or later for Microsoft Entra ID-joined devices, version 2004 or later for hybrid-joined devices), Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2025, Windows 10, and Windows 11 operating systems.
- This feature does not work on every RDP client. For example, it does not work on the Microsoft app for macOS (Microsoft Remote Desktop). However, it does work on the Microsoft app for Windows (Remote Desktop Connection).
