How to enroll a third-party authenticator app?

March 30, 2023 By Rublon Authors

Last updated on November 12, 2024

Note: If you are looking for instructions on how to enroll the Rublon Authenticator mobile app, refer to How to enroll a mobile device with Rublon Authenticator?. Rublon Authenticator provides a more secure experience and offers more authentication methods than 3rd party TOTP-based authenticator apps.

Rublon supports third-party authenticator apps, including but not limited to Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy, to allow a one-time password (OTP) login experience. Refer to the instructions below to learn how to enroll your third-party authenticator app and use that app to sign in to your applications.

Note

You can only enroll one third-party authenticator app. You can, however, enroll both the Rublon Authenticator and a third-party authenticator app and use them interchangeably.

Note

Administrators can also use a third-party app to sign in to the Rublon Admin Console.

Note

Using this instruction you can also register hardware tokens compatible with SHA-1 OATH.

Enroll Your Third-Party Authenticator App

To sign in using your third-party authenticator app, you must enroll your app using the Self-Enrollment wizard. You can access this wizard via the Manage Authenticators view or by clicking an Enrollment Link sent to you by an administrator.

Enroll Your Third-Party App Using the Manage Authenticators View

If your integrated service does not support the Rublon Prompt, ask your administrator to send you an Enrollment Email and navigate to Enroll Your Third-Party App Using the Enrollment Email. If your integrated service supports the Rublon Prompt, you can self-enroll your third-party app using the following steps.

1. Initiate login to your application.

2. Provide your username and password.

3. Rublon Prompt appears.

4. Click Manage Authenticators.

5. To confirm your identity before proceeding, choose one of the available authentication methods.

Note

You will not have to confirm your identity if none of the authentication methods are available. In that case, you can go straight to Step 8.

6. After you confirm your identity with one of the available methods (e.g., Email Link), the Rublon Prompt will display the Manage Authenticators view.

7. Click Add Authenticator.

8. Select Third-Party Authenticator as your authenticator type and click Next.

9. Follow the instructions on the screen to activate your third-party authenticator app.

10. Congratulations. You have just enrolled your third-party authenticator app. You can now Sign in With Your Third-Party Authenticator App.

Enroll Your Third-Party App Using the Enrollment Email

If your administrator has sent you an Enrollment Email using the Rublon Admin Console, you must now enroll your 3rd party app.

1. Open the email message and click the Enroll Your Authenticator button.

2. Click Add Authenticator.

3. Select Third-Party Authenticator as your authenticator type and click Next.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen to activate your third-party authenticator app.

5. Congratulations. You have just enrolled your third-party authenticator app. You can now Sign in With Your Third-Party Authenticator App.

Sign In With Your Third-Party Authenticator App

There are two login scenarios:

Third-Party App Login Example 1: Rublon Prompt

1. Return to the Rublon Prompt and select the Passcode authentication method.

2. Enter the 6-digit one-time password (OTP) generated by your third-party authenticator app.

3. You will be successfully signed in to your application.

Third-Party App Login Example 2: Append Mode
